Use coding to bring Halloween characters to life! Create a maze for a witch to follow, collecting potion ingredients on the way
The Witch's Broomstick
Years 5/6
Halloween is a theme that is full of fun characters, so let's bring them to life by creating a maze game around them.
- Teach 'The Untouchable Maze' activity from Year 6, 4.1 'Problem Solving & Modelling' but using Halloween characters and items as your game's main characters and objects, for example:
- The main character could be a witch.
- The background could be the dark, enchanted forrest.
- The collectables could be ingredients for a potion.
- The 'goal' of the game could be her broomstick.
- For the more confident pupils, wizards and monsters could be the 'enemies' you must avoid.
Ability Variation
Advanced
- Add 'enemies' which the player must avoid. These can be stationary or moving and could be wizards and monsters.
- The code needed for this activity is the same as the code for touching the walls, but with 'touching colour' changed to 'touching sprite'.
Success Criteria
- I can code a game on a full visual platform using example code.
- I can vary sprites, backgrounds and codes to make my game interesting.

Halloween Pictogram
Creating pictograms is an early step into graphs, and the activity can be easily be varied to fit any topic, including Halloween.
Halloween Pictogram
Reception - Yr 1/2
Pictograms are the easiest way to display data and are a good stepping stone to full graphs. Let pupils ask all their classmates for their favourite Halloween characters and show the result as a graph.
This is a very simple activity. Just follow the instructions for the 'Record information on a pictogram' activity for Reception but use 'Who is your favourite Halloween character' as the question.
- Purple Mash has a selection of Halloween characters in their clip art selection for 2Count, or you can import your own.
- J2E allows you to import your own pictures into pictograms.
Ability Variation
Challenge
Create a bar chart instead of a pictogram. See the 'Survey Time' activity for Year 2.
