Planning, Sourcing and Searching

3.1

Intro

This element consists of two very different concepts.

  • 'Planning' refers to the usual pre-task planning that you'd undertake in any subject i.e. identifying success criteria
  • 'Sourcing and Searching' on the other hand is all about finding information and media online through effective searches.

Framework

3.1 - Planning, Sourcing and Searching

  • identify some success criteria in response to questions, e.g. choose appropriate colour and add title to video
  • use text when searching for information/media (image, video, sound) and use an internet browser independently, e.g. open web browser and type in one keyword for a search.

Skill by Skill

  • Identify success criteria (with leading questions from the teacher).
  • Navigate using a web browser.

Part 1

Planning

There is not much difference between this element in Year 1 and what they were doing in Reception. It's all about beginning to identify success criteria themselves, all be it with questions from the teacher to guide them.

Identifying Success Criteria

Ask them questions that guide them towards identifying a success criteria themselves. For example:

  • When using painting software ask "Should we draw a tiny picture in the middle?" to, hopefully, elicit the response "No, it should fill the screen".
  • When taking photos ask "If you're taking a photo of your favourite toy, do you take photo of only half the toy?" to elicit the response "No, the whole toy needs to be in the picture".
  • When typing their name below their work ask "Should every letter be small?" to elicit the response "No, the first letter must be a capital letter".

Part 2

Sourcing & Searching

Navigating the web is such a key part of our lives these days. Whether you do it on a computer, on a tablet or on a phone, the experience is relatively similar.

Steps:

  • Model how to move between web pages by clicking on links. The best way to demonstrate and practise this is by using a child friendly website they can navigate by clicking back and forth. It could be a factual website or a games website or any appropriate website.
  • Show them how to use the forward and back buttons.
  • Let them practise navigating!
