Health and Well-being

1.2

Intro

'Health and Well-being' is mainly concerned with balancing screen time with more active play time and ensuring pupils understand that some technology has age restrictions.

In Year 3, we focus on age restrictions on social media and video games and the effects of watching or using inappropriate content.

Framework

1.2 - Health and Well-being

  • acknowledge age restrictions and suitability of digital media and devices, e.g. locate and begin to understand PEGI ratings and age restriction guidelines
  • identify physical and emotional effects of playing/watching inappropriate content/games.

Vocabulary

appropriate     age limit     restricted     unsuitable     PEGI ratings

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

Unfortunately, the SWGfL schemes of work for Year 3 do not cover teaching about age-restricted media and therefore you'll have to ensure you cover this element separately. Here are some activities you may consider:

  • Show cards with images of computer game covers for different age ratings (ensuring there's nothing inappropriate on the images). Ask pupils to decide to what age each game should be restricted before showing them the real rating.
  • Lead a class discussion on what causes young children to want to play games meant for older people (e.g. peer pressure, wanting to act like adults, not aware of age restrictions, showing off to peers, parents allowing them etc.) and why this is bad for children.
  • Discuss what else has age limits other than games. They may instantly think of videos and perhaps social media, but point out that it extends to other parts of life (drinking, driving, voting, leaving school, fireworks). They are all there to keep children safe. Game restrictions serve the same purpose.
