Digital Rights, Licensing and Ownership

1.3

Intro

'Digital Rights, Licensing and Ownership' deals mostly with copyright and the importance of crediting sources.

In Year 3, only a few aspects of the subject are dealt with, namely the importance of giving credit where credit is due.

Framework

1.3 - Digital Rights, Licensing and Ownership

  • explain how giving credit is a sign of respect
  • explain when and how it is acceptable to use the work of others.

Vocabulary

owner     copyright     credit     respect     watermark

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

Unfortunately, the SWGfL schemes of work for Year 3 do not cover copyright and how to credit it and therefore you'll have to ensure you cover this element separately. However, this element is not a major focus in Year 3 so it should be easily covered. Here are some activities you may consider:

  • When the pupils are searching online for images for another task (e.g. '3.2b Presenting'), highlight images that have watermarks across them. Discuss why the watermarks are there (i.e. to prevent people using the images without paying the owner). Persuade the pupils not to use such images in their work as it would be a form of stealing.
  • Have pupils start giving credit to books or websites they've used when researching. There's no need for any detailed list of sources - that will come in later years.
