Intro

'Health and Well-being' is mainly concerned with balancing screen time with more active play time and ensuring pupils understand that some technology has age restrictions.

This element does not need extensive coverage in Year 1, but you do need to get your pupils used to the idea of time restrictions on their use of technology.

Framework

1.2 - Health and Well-being

  • use digital devices within a controlled environment, time and context, e.g use for a given time limit and specified outcome.

Vocabulary

time limit     screen time

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

Unfortunately, the SWGfL schemes of work for Year 1 do not cover restricting screen time and therefore you'll have to ensure you cover this element separately. Here are some activities you may consider:

  • During independent time, have a countdown clock for pupils' use of iPads. When pupils start using the iPad, they start the countdown clock / sand timer. Praise and reward those who independently stop when their time is up.
  • Have group or class discussions on why we should restrict screen time.
  • When iPads are out for a set task, always remind your pupils that they should only use them for that purpose. Using Guided Access may help by stopping them from leaving the app you selected.
