Intro

'Health and Well-being' is mainly concerned with balancing screen time with more active play time and ensuring pupils understand that some technology has age restrictions.

In Year 6 we focus on what tempts us to play games or watch videos for prolonged periods, and the effect this can have on health.

Framework

1.2 - Health and Well-being

  • understand the importance of balancing game and screen time with other parts of their lives, e.g. explore the reasons why they may be tempted to spend more time playing games or find it difficult to stop playing and the effect this has on their health.

Vocabulary

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

None of the Year 6 lessons created by SWGfL deals with excessive screen time therefore you'll need to ensure you that you yourself deal with it.

The best way to tackle this topic is through class discussions and a persuasive debate activity.

Ask pupils what they like about using technology at home. (This includes video, tv, computer games, social media, tablets). Why do some people spend hours every night with technology? Then ask what problems spending so much time on technology may cause? If they have difficulty thinking of any, ask them to make a list of other activities you might do if you had no technology (e.g. playing football, visiting a friend, doing arts and crafts, baking, boardgames, games that use imagination etc.)

Consider having a persuasive speech competition on the topic. Every pupil prepares a speech choosing one of the following titles:

  • We should use as much technology as possible to prepare us for the future
  • We should limit our use of technology. There are more important things.

This could be set as homework, with pupils presenting in class and the best 3 going on to present at a school assembly where a winner is chosen.
