Intro

Evaluating and improving work is a cornerstone of teaching and learning. To achieve this element of the Digital Competency Framework, you do not necessarily need to use technology. Whatever self-assessment and peer-assessment techniques your pupils are familiar with can be used.

Having said that, there are excellent ways to use technology effectively for self and peer assessment. You'll find a few suggestions below.

Framework

3.3 - Evaluating and Improving

  • give an opinion about their own and others' work and suggest improvements independently and collaboratively, e.g. check through their work and correct their spelling/use a spellchecker; decide if the red line underneath words point to misspelt words; use suggested spellings where appropriate.
  • give reasons for choices made, e.g. discuss the benefits and limitations of a spellchecker especially with Welsh language documents.

Skill by Skill

  • Spot and correct mistakes in their work.
  • Comment on their own work and on that of others.

Activity Suggestions

  1. Have them take a photo of their work and insert it into 'Explain Everything' on the iPad and then annotate and record a voiceover giving their feedback and explaining why they made certain choices.
  2. If the work has been typed in Office 365 or Google Drive, have the pupils use the Comment function to add comments on what they would like to improve. See 2.2 'Collaboration' for full details about peer-evaluation through comments.
  3. Make a Three-Bit Video (see 3.2c 'Photos and Videos') explaining two things they liked about their work and one thing they would like to improve. Include a photo or video clip of their work.
