Health and Well-being
1.2
The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)
We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.
Activity Suggestions
Unfortunately, the SWGfL schemes of work for Year 2 do not cover the advantages and disadvantages of digital media and therefore you'll have to ensure you cover this element separately.
- Discuss what we mean by 'digital media' (i.e. movies, YouTube videos, apps, games, photos, websites etc.).
- Provide groups with cards featuring some positive and negative effects of digital media on children (see below). Pupils discuss which are positive and which are negative.
Positive Effects include:
- We can learn through videos and educational games.
- We can find out about people and places far away.
- We can teach our parents how to use technology.
- We can learn how to solve problems in computer games.
- We can be creative by making our own videos, presentations or drawings.
Negative Effects include:
- Many videos and games are not appropriate for children.
- Time spent with technology is time we could have spent playing outside or doing homework.
- Sitting down with technology can make you lazy and unfit.
- Some people don't sleep enough as they're on their phones or iPads at all hours.
- People can send mean messages using technology.
