Intro

'Digital Rights, Licensing and Ownership' mostly deals with copyright and the importance of crediting sources.

In Year 4 we focus on plagiarism and copyright symbols.

Framework

1.3 - Digital rights, licensing and ownership

  • understand that copying the work of others and presenting it as their own is called 'plagiarism', e.g. begin to consider consequences of plagiarism
  • recognise watermarks and copyright symbols, e.g. recognise watermarks on a variety of media, know the reasons for using watermarks and explore how watermarks can be added in different software.

Vocabulary

owner     copyright     credit     respect     plagiarism     acceptable use

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

  1. Most of this element is thoroughly covered in the SWGfL and Welsh Government's Online Safety lesson resource - Lesson 5, Year 4 which focuses on 'Whose is it, anyway?'
  2. Remind pupils to credit their sources when creating presentations and using images found online.
  3. Use a website such as umarkonline.com to add watermarks to their own images.
  4. Show the Copyright logo (black C in a circle). Show that it can be seen on most websites and even inside books. Explain that people use the word Copyright and the logo to claim ownership of the image or of a piece of writing.
