Intro

'Identity, Image and Reputation' involves keeping our personal data safe online. In Year 4 we focus on digital footprints, protecting ourselves from identity theft and the risks when downloading and installing.

Framework

1.1 - Identity, Image and Reputation

  • understand how to protect themselves from online identity theft, e.g. start to identify risks of e-mails and phishing communications, scam websites and advertisements which ask for private information
  • be aware that information put online leaves a digital footprint or trail, e.g. to aid identity theft
  • identify risks and benefits of installing software, e.g. identify possible risks of installing free and paid for software, for instance free software could download viruses to the device/computer.

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

Sharing Images and Data

  1. Lesson 2, Year 4 of the SWGfL Online Safety schemes of learning deals with 'Private and Personal Information'.
  2. Create a poster (see 3.2a), a presentation (see 3.2b) or a video (see 3.2c) on how to avoid being caught by a scam or phishing email.

Regularly discuss the unlikelihood of any 'Too Good To Be True' offer actually being true. Stress the fact that as soon as you share something online then you've lost control of that information. Anyone can see it.

Risks of Downloading and Installing

  1. Discuss how viruses can be hidden in things you download and install, especially free software.
