Intro

"Are you sure you saved it?" "In which folder did you save it?" "What computer did you use in the last lesson?" How many minutes in how many lessons have been wasted in such conversations? Teaching your pupils to save properly is not only an important skill, it will save you and them hours of frustration in the long term!

In Year 6, it's all about keeping your folders and files organised and sharing completed work online.

Points to Note

'Saving and Opening' are far from being the most exciting skills to teach or to learn. Show them how, remind them often and give them time to practise.

In Year 6, pupils should be sharing files and videos confidently using a range of methods. Look below for some more detail on saving in Year 6

Saving in Detail

Folder Management

We all know what an untidy folder looks like. Have you looked at your school server recently? Use 'Living in the Cloud' activity in 2.2 'Collaboration' to help teach pupils to look after their online drives.

Sharing

We often talk of writing for a purpose. Things that your pupils create with technology should also be made for a purpose. What enjoyment is there in making a video or designing a poster if nobody ever gets to see it. Every finished video task should be, at the very least, shown to the class. Every poster should be displayed. Saving in the cloud enables pupils to share with ease.

  • Make sure your pupils know how to upload videos and images from an iPad to a Cloud drive. (One Drive, Google Drive, J2E)
  • Teach them to change sharing settings for videos, images and documents in the cloud so that they can be seen by other pupils.
  • Pupils can create QR codes to display their work.
  • If the work does not display images of pupils, or their names, upload to the school website or (depending on school policy) YouTube.

'Saving and Sharing' is not hard to teach or learn. Just show them exactly how it's done and they'll do it perfectly all year long!
