Intro

'Online Behaviour and Cyberbullying' is the aspect of the 'Citizenship' strand with which you will be most familiar.

In Year 2 we begin to communicate online and spend time thinking of how we should behave when doing so.

Framework

1.4 - Online Behaviour and Cyber-bullying

  • use digital technology to communicate and connect with others locally and globally, e.g. text, image, photographs, video, newsletters, e-mail, web services
  • interact appropriately with others, e.g. follow the same rules when communicating face-to-face and online.

Vocabulary

email     video call     text     blog     photos     kind     appropriate     online     offline

The Citizenship strand is slightly different from the other three in that it focuses as much on information as it does on skills. There are also Online Safety year-by-year schemes of learning created by South West Grid for Learning on behalf of the Welsh Government which cover much of the Citizenship strand. This resource can be found on Hwb (link below)

We therefore restrict ourselves in the Citizenship strand to a few quick suggestions for activities, focusing on those few aspects of Citizenship not covered by the SWGfL schemes.

Activity Suggestions

Connect locally and globally with digital technology.

  1. See the activities in the 2.1 'Communication' element which involve emailing.

Interact appropriately with others

  1. Lesson 3, Year 2 of the SWGfL Online Resource is called 'Screen Out the Mean' and deals with cyberbullying.
  2. If your school has access to Purple Mash, send an email to your pupils from Mr Twit using 2Email (see the Year 1 'Communication' Activity for instructions). The email should include a few mean words and sentences (but not too mean!). Ask your pupils to reply to the email. Once they have done so, discuss what they thought of Mr Twit's original email. Did they feel it was mean? How did they reply? What should they do if they receive mean emails in future? Remember to explain at the end that you sent the email and all replies went to yourself, not to Mr Twit!
  3. Whenever pupils are working on a task that involves email (for example, when they work on the tasks in 2.1 Communication) remind them that they should behave online exactly as they behave offline.
